The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide, by David J. Miklowitz PhD

I've read many books on this topic and I am very impressed with this one. Since the second edition so recently (2011), contains the latest research and findings, some of which are new to me. Miklowitz is a wonderful writer who manages to both explain concepts thoroughly and well while not sounding condescending. He discusses topics that other books do not, like what bipolar disorder looks like to family and friends, and how it feels from the inside. He offers a lot of good information about how to prevent mania, managing moods, stabilize the person's environment, dealing with drugs, get a proper diagnosis, made at home and work, and a special concern for women. Especially valuable is the chapter in which bipolar disorder comes from, and some recent research on Ehlers' social rhythm stability hypothesis. Interesting. The only topic that I would like him to include the role of sunlight in BD - this will be very helpful for some people I know who are very sensitive to light. But otherwise, really great information and advice, presented very well. Highly recommended.
